      Beloved black leader dies
      By BEN FINLEY
      Bucks County Courier Times

Gilbert Ridley, a well-known African-American leader in Bucks County who forced an oil company to change its policy toward minority customers, died Sunday in Lower Bucks Hospital at the age of 77.

Mr. Ridley was a former candidate for the state General Assembly. He also worked as an Equal Employment Opportunity officer at the former Naval Air Development Center in Warminster.

In 1998, Mr. Ridley's efforts, along with his lawyer Clyde Waite, changed the corporate policy of the international oil company Amoco. The new policy sought to avoid unfair characterizations against minority customers at its gas stations.

Mr. Ridley had been falsely accused of stealing $26 worth of gas from the Amoco food shop on Lincoln Highway in Falls.

He said the accusation was made because he was black.

"He was outraged by the treatment. And he was committed to doing something about it," said Waite, who works in a Newtown Borough law firm. "He was not going to be intimidated just because it was a large oil company."

Mr. Ridley was about to file suit against the company when he and Waite sat down with Amoco representatives.

"They recognized that what was done by their attendant was wrong," Waite said.

The company offered a monetary settlement, which Mr. Ridley accepted while urging the company to change its policy.

"Mr. Ridley was not terribly interested in money. He only wanted to have the company recognize that it was subjecting a whole class of people to discriminatory treatment," Waite said.

Mr. Ridley ran on the Democratic ticket for a spot in the state House for the 178th District in 1990. He was living in Churchville at the time. His opponent was Republican Roy Reinard, who won the election.

During the election Mr. Ridley focused on traffic, development and education. During that time he said he wasn't running against Reinard but for Gilbert Ridley.

"For an underfunded, minority Democrat in Bucks County, he made quite a showing," said his daughter Michele Ridley-Cook of Springfield, Va.

Mr. Ridley was born in Victoria, Va., and moved with his family to Sound Bound Brook, N.J., in the field-to-factory migration of African Americans in the 1920s and 1930s. He moved to Bucks after working in a Navy depot in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Mr. Ridley relocated to Morrisville in the early 1970s when he began work as an Equal Employment Opportunity officer at the former Naval Air Development Center in Warminster. He traveled around the country recruiting minorities in college to work as engineers at the naval center, Ridley-Cook said.

He also served on the Bucks County Human Relations Council for many years. There he was a deputy chairman who helped mediate disputes between police and community members in the county.

"Gil was particularly good at community intervention," said former borough council Chairwoman Teri Siegel of Yardley. "He was able to go to town meetings and ease tensions. He was very beloved in the community."

Some of Mr. Ridley's major contributions to Bucks County came when he served as a community liaison and youth mentor at Bucks County Community College.

He worked to encourage students to stay in school, and to seek a degree in higher education. He also worked closely with international students and students of color with the target of helping them succeed in college, said Bucks County Community College president James Linksz.

"Gil was the kind of person who could go into the community and get people to rally around and support other students," Linksz said.

Mr. Ridley also developed a summer program to keep at-risk junior high school students in school.

Even after he retired from BCCC, Mr. Ridley continued to come back to the school to connect with students and the community.

"Gil never retired completely, mentally or ever from being committed to the students," Linksz said. "We fully expected to see him this summer."

No official cause of death has been released, but it is thought to be heart related, said Mr. Ridley's wife, Lillian Ridley.

Mr. Ridley was living with his wife in Lower Makefield at the time of his death.

GEORGE TATNALL

I am sorry to pass additional bad news at this holiday season, but I learned
today of the passing of George Tatnall, earlier this week. George had
retired long before the move to Pax. Those that remember the base being
called Johnsville may remember George.

Since I have already interjected another email in the system. I would like
to agree with those that said the base was usually referred to the base as
"Johnsville" back in the 60's and into the 70's. I remember several times
telling people in Washington or elsewhere, where I was from and they would
ask if that was the place that had the flood. I believe the "Johnsville"
use faded and the "NADC" use emerged when they closed the post office in
Johnsville and our address changed to Warminster. It is somewhat ironic
that we went back to using our location as an identifier rather than the
"NADC" when we were merged with multiple locations under NAWC.

that they could do for him because it was everywhere now,. John.s wife,
Dee, 57, said. .John said, .Enough is enough, I want to go home to die...
His family assembled at their house in Mechanicsville to spend their last
Christmas with Santini.

Two of his three children . Jason, 29, and Kristin, 26, . rushed home from
Pennsylvania. His youngest son, Evan, 23, who graduated from St. Mary.s
Ryken and Towson, was already there waiting.

.The only medicine he was on was painkillers,. Dee said. .What people
don.t understand is that I describe it as a wonderful week with him.
Everybody made their peace and said goodbye. It was happy, it was sad. We
cried, we laughed. John was totally at peace with himself.
.I think knowing that he.s finally at peace and not suffering made a big
difference. Up until Christmas day he was coherent. Christmas day is when
he went to that next level..

Evan played on Towson.s lacrosse team. Santini did his best to attend all
of Evan.s games, even when the cancer made his immune system so weak that
an onset of the common cold could mean death.
As Santini slipped away, his last words gripped the family.
.He kept telling us that he loved us,. Evan said.
.He kept repeating that,. Dee added.

A day after Christmas, Santini, Evan.s role model and biggest fan, died in
his home at the age of 59. The following Saturday, John.s mother, Mary,
70, of Old Forge, Pa., passed away.

Santini was born and raised in Philadelphia. The family had his body
returned there to be buried. After taking care of the funeral arrangements
in Philadelphia, the family went to Old Forge to attend Mary.s funeral.
John Sothoron, Evan.s lacrosse coach at St. Mary.s Ryken, became good
friends with Santini. Sothoron.s son, Reed, played with Evan at St. Mary.s
Ryken and was his teammate again when both moved on to Towson.
Reed Sothoron was named to the 2004 Division I all-American team. Reed is
a third-generation all-American. His father, John, was an all-American
lacrosse goalie at Towson, and his grandfather, Norwood, was an
all-American midfielder and quarterback for the football team at the
University of Maryland. John and Reed are the first father-son
all-Americans at Towson.

.The impressive thing is that he never complained, never said, .Why me?..
Sothoron said. .I think a lot of people would have given up. His immune
system was so low that he had to sit 200 feet away all bundled up. But
watching his son play kept him going. He loved every single second of it..
Santini, who was a software engineer at the Patuxent River Naval Air
Station, was first diagnosed with cancer in December of 2002, almost two
months before Evan began his third season with the Tigers.

.He went in for surgery the first week of December, right after
Thanksgiving,. Dee said. .He had the tumor removed, then he was diagnosed
with non-Hodgkin.s lymphoma. They knew it was cancer but they didn.t know
what kind, so after they removed the tumor in his cheek area, that.s when
it was confirmed that it was non-Hodgkin.s lymphoma..
John and Dee decided to wait until their children came home for Christmas
to break the news to them.

.John didn.t want to tell the children in the beginning until we found out
for sure,. Dee said. .John didn.t want to tell Evan before because he had
finals and he didn.t want to upset him. Our two older children live in
Philadelphia and the first time we were together as a family was Christmas
Eve. That.s when we told them..

The news shocked the family, but Evan remembered how his father didn.t
want his condition to affect the family.

.The first thing he said was that he wasn.t worried about his cancer,.
Evan said. .He was worried about us worrying about him. So he was like, .I
will be happy and I will be fine if I know you.re fine. Then he said, .You
have to go back to school. You have school and lacrosse.. He put himself
second to us always. Just having that, him being so strong about me being
in school and playing lacrosse, that helped.

.It was a motivator for me. I wanted to do well in school, wanted to do
well in lacrosse, because I knew it meant so much to him..
Evan played every game in 2003, his third season playing defense for
Towson.

Santini attended most, if not all, of Evan.s games that season, even while
he received chemotherapy and radiation therapy to fight the cancer.
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy
uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells.

.He sat away from the crowd,. Dee said. .By getting chemo, he was very
susceptible. With his immune system what it was he could have died . a
common cold could have killed him. He would always have a couple layers on
because he was always very cold..

Santini received his first stem-cell transplant in April of 2003. By
September he had beat cancer and went on a trip to Ireland with Dee.
In November of 2003, Santini found another lump on his right cheek. By
December the cancer had resurfaced, and this time Santini opted not to
have the surgery.

.They did radiation, chemotherapy, and more radiation,. Dee said. .John
exceeded the amount of any chemotherapy anybody could have. It did was it
was supposed to do, it took the tumor away..

Santini also participated in an experimental program with the National
Institute of Health in Bethesda. The program involved a form of
self-chemotherapy for Santini.

.And we scheduled it so that we could be at Evan.s games in the afternoon
and leave the game as soon as it was over and be in Bethesda so he could
start his treatment,. Dee said. .He self-infused chemo over a five-day
period and we had to go back every day to have the infusion changed. He
timed it so it would run out and we.d have just enough time to get to NIH
from Towson just before it ran out and they.d hook him up with the next
24-hour infusion..

The chemotherapy, radiation therapy and treatment helped Santini defeat
cancer again.

Evan gained a starting position on the team in 2004.
.During games, I.d always look up and try to find my mom and dad,. Evan
said. .Depending on how he.d feel that morning they would decide on
whether he would come up or not. It was always that anticipation and then
an emotional boost when I would see him. One night, my mom and dad got to
come out, and Mr. Sothoron and I got to talking and he said, .I don.t know
if you realize it or not but your dad lives to come watch you play. It
gives him two hours a week not to think about his illness. That gives him
something to just put everything behind him and just think about that..
.Up until that I didn.t realize. Once I did, lacrosse had a whole new
meaning to me..

The Tigers won their second straight Colonel Athletic Association
conference title in 2004, but Towson ended its season with a 15-8 loss to
Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Division I playoffs.
Santini missed a few of Evan.s games in 2004. Evan made sure that someone
videotaped every missed game so they could watch them together.
Santini received his second stem-cell transplant in May of 2004.
.After he had the second transplant is when I would bring home the tapes
of the games he didn.t see,. Evan said. .Even then, after everything he.d
gone through, I.m done playing lacrosse, the season is over, he.s sitting
here watching the games. He.d stop plays, rewind and ask me what I was
thinking..

Evan graduated from Towson in August of 2004 and stayed at home to help
his father.

In October, Santini discovered another lump on his cheek and went through
five more weeks of radiation therapy. With the help of his son and wife,
Santini made it through November and to Dec. 16, when the doctors
delivered the grave news.
One fan stuck out
Towson coach Tony Seaman.s name is synonymous with success in Division I
lacrosse.

Seaman, 1 of 10 active Division I college lacrosse head coaches with over
200 career wins, is two weeks away from his seventh season with the
Tigers.

Seaman is 1 of 2 active Division I head coaches to have taken teams to the
NCAA Tournament more than 15 times and is also one of two active coaches
to have earned the National Coach of the Year honor at two different
Division I schools . Towson and the University of Pennsylvania.
He has 24 years of coaching experience.

On top of that, Seaman is the only coach in Division I history to take
three separate schools . Towson, Penn and Johns Hopkins . to the NCAA
Tournament.

The coach has watched a lot of games, called countless plays and met many
fans in that time, but one sticks out in his mind.
.In my lengthy coaching career, I.ve come across a number of parents and
no one has impressed me as much as John has,. Seaman said. .Incredible .
that.s about the best way to say it. He had two wonderful boys, a great
daughter and a wonderful wife. We have a tremendous group of parents that
go to our games. To be truthful, he could have been in the greatest health
and he would have come to every game. I don.t know if I saw him miss a
home or away game.

.In the end, he was very sickly. In the 70-degree heat, I.d see him with
winter coats and winter pants trying to maintain body heat. Certainly, we
made it available for him to sit in the press box, but any time he could
sit in the stands he would. He was an amazing battler to me. He.s been an
inspiration to me like one of those characters in the Readers Digest.s
inspirational stories. No matter what happens to me health-wise, I will
always think back to the way he fought..

Seaman first met John and Dee as part of his recruitment process. Seaman
believes recruiting isn.t just about watching a player in a high school
game.

.One of things I always do when I recruit is I look into the background of
the family,. Seaman said. .It makes it a lot easier as a coach to know the
background of the kid..

By meeting the parents, Seaman not only gets an idea of what the
prospective athlete will be able to bring to the team, but also whether or
not he .will make good decisions. when he.s away from the team.
.In Evan.s case, there was never a doubt when I met both his dad and mom
that the boy was brought up the right way,. Seaman said.
The coach realized right away that the athlete would be a .great player to
have on the team,. but Seaman also admitted that he didn.t expect Evan to
accomplish as much as he did.

.He had great character,. Seaman said. .In talking to John [Sothoron], if
found out that Evan was always the first one to practice and the last one
to leave. Those kind of guys make themselves a better player. I didn.t
think he.d take a starting position when I first saw him. At the time, if
I had to bet money on it, I would.ve said no. But he proved me wrong..
Seaman watched Evan work from playing in the last half of his freshman
season on the man-down, or short-handed, defense to participating in 12
games his sophomore year.

Evan had three ground balls, caused four turnovers and played in almost
every game his junior year. By his senior year, Evan.s work paid off as he
earned a starting position on the team.

.I think he played every minute of every game,. Seaman said. .As a senior,
he was definitely a role model . a great inspiration to any kid who has a
dream..

                       A TRIBUTE TO NORMA BAZOW
                        A LOVING WIFE, MOTHER,
                GRANDMOTHER, MOTHER-IN-LAW AND FRIEND

One can never know where life will take us or when death will shake us,
but the memories we share of Norma.s life will help take away our tears.
Many of you here today have known Norma a very long time and know she was
blessed with a beautiful life . engulfed by the love of her husband,
family and friends.

Norma was born on October 2nd 1933. She was the oldest child of Fred and

and James.

Norma found love, the precious jewel of human life, early in life when she

Motivated by love, Norma nurtured and was devoted to her children Steve,

worried about them and gave them advice until the very end.

Norma had many friends whom she kept eternally. Each and every one of her

Doug,
I don't have a copy of the obituary, but Mary Ellsworth of the Pottstown
area (formally of Warminster) passed away, Jan 8, 2007. She worked as a
Budget Analyst, I believe in the Comptroller Department. She was 70. I
believe the obit is in one of the Quakertown papers. Maybe someone else
can shed some light on it. I found out here in Pax, because she when
they lived down here she went to the same Church as I do.

. Respiration studies for NASA to determine the effects of
breathing oxygen at high altitude while working with the original
   Mercury Astronauts.

. Senior physiologist in charge of the development of the Mercury
   Astronauts. pressure suits.

. Determination of the optimum oxygen environment needed for
long-term space travel using long-term habitability testing in the Navy
   altitude chamber.

. Human volunteer immersion studies to determine the
effectiveness of anti-exposure suits, which became a requirement during
   military operations over frigid waters.

. Conduct of research studies to determine the effects of high
impact acceleration forces on the human body.
